Flandern bunker

Location: Hindenburgufer, Feldstrasse, Im Anscharpark, Villa Nolde

Constructed with the help of slave labourer, it was once air-raid shelter, emergency command centre and communication unit of the war port. Towards the end of the war the bunker was also shelter for civilians. The association memorial Kilian uses this war ruin as a place for education, understanding among nations and peace building.

The Flandern bunker is information and meeting place and is used as suitable starting point for vivid history teaching. As ruin this listed bunker documents the madness of war and defeat at the same time. It is meant to be a place of remembrance for the victims of the NS-dictatorship. From here a bridge can be created between personal experience and world history.

The association memorial Kilian purchased the Flandern bunker in 2001. With its work it wants to send a message against war, oppression and violence.

Tirpitz port Kiel

In 1871 Kiel was declared Reichs war port and with that the city changed completely. The navy settled in Kiel Wik at the strategically most important Kiel Canal. The still existing Tirpitz port is the base of the German navy and homeport to the sailing training ship Gorch Fock. The bark, constructed in 1958 is here when not sailing.
During the Kieler Week a great international armada meeting takes place at the Tirpitz port. The most diverse navy ships are guaranteed large numbers of spectators.

Listed old buildings

The Anschar park was created as navy garrison military hospital in the years 1903 - 1907. Today it is listed. The former clinic buildings were built as demanding brick-plaster architecture with Art Nouveau elements; The park was used originally for patient as recreation, today it is a public park. Until 2005 the buildings were still used as a clinic. By now the re-use of the preserved buildings has started: The former gatekeeper's house (house 19) has been restored according to monumental regulations and a family has moved in, the former administration building (house 1) will be turned into large apartments. The former estate building (house 8) is being turned into an atelier centre and together with the neighbouring boiler house (house 15) it will bring culture to the park as an event and gastronomy unit. It is situated art the new south entrance.

North pier and Scheer harbour

For more than 100 years the north pier and its surrounding area was formed by military usage, military orientated business and energy supply. Through structural reforms of the German Federal Armed Forces there is the possibility for the first time to integrate the until now military used surface, into an urbanistic concept. A public park reaching from the Hindenburg banks to the Uferstrasse as well as promenades and free spaces along the fjord and canal are being created in combination with high-quality residences, business and services. The attractive newly built 'Marinequarter Kiel-Wik' will have a maritime reference.
